Substitution Class, facilitated through ICT, fiddled by students' themselves

I was asked to substitute class II on 4th of October, 2019 in the third period. I had no plan prepared for the class as I got the information during the second period when I was teaching Maths in class five.
I went to the class empty handed thinking that I will engage children in reading but it was not the way I thought. I suggested reading but all most, all the members of the class wanted to watch Rapunzel story as I have shown the same to other classes few days back. They were few numbers of picture stories saved in my lap top but on that day I did not take it to school.
I accepted their request and took the students to the school computer lab. Firstly, I have shown them how to download the story on Rapunzal from net through projector. Then, they are asked to form groups and I asked them to download the stories on Rapunzel from the internet. In groups, they are asked to watch and read the story that they have downloaded.
Later I projected the story on the screen and the students are asked to watch.
The discussion began with question and answer session. A boy summarized the whole story to the class saying that it was interesting. Around three to six children have not understood the story and asked the individual group to share to their members.

To motivate children in learning, it is sometimes useful to use audio visual kits in daily classroom teaching as children develops their feeling and love listening to the animals having the conversation. They are once more asked to look at the story in their group computer.

From the lesson, I came to know that children enjoy watching or listening to stories. We must create a learning space to groom right from the beginning. Besides, I found that when students explore themselves through internet, they find it difficult to get the topic that they are asked to find out by the teacher and in the process they learn a lot. Though it was time consuming, I found out a joy in the faces of the children. Today teaching through ICT has really made the lesson enriching beyond my expectation.

Your workdone during a substitute class mean a lot to them as they could read, watch and then also explore using the ICT. Using ICT sometimes bring not to students and this also helps their concentration in the next session. Nice work done la.

You used good idea to engage your children though you had NO proper plan. Your method is one way of engaging our children during absent of other colleagues.

  8. Your idea of substituting the class was amazing and seems very interesting. For today's learner we hust need to provide platform such as internet connected computer, laptop or smartphone they would easily pick up. However as you have mentioned in your write up some children didn't understand the story...so to make more clear it would have been better if you could have explained the story in between by pausing the clips.
